This Saturday (March 23) lights will be going out around the world between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. EDT. Participating are more than 7,000 towns and cities throughout 152 countries across seven continents.

We may not be as lucky as our fellow Canadians in Newfoundland and Labrador where St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday (the Monday closest to the 17th), but we can still put on the green and catch the spirit of this Irish celebration.
So who are we celebrating anyway? Wee Patrick was born somewhere on the present-day border between Scotland and England. He was captured at the age of 16, and held in Ireland for six years before he managed to flee back to his family. During his enslavement, St. Patrick became very religious, and later in life returned to Ireland as a missionary. He is said to have played a significant role in converting the citizens of Ireland to Christianity and in removing the island of “snakes”- though there is no proof of any snakes in Ireland for the past 10,000 years.
